There is a war going on at the moment . On one side we have people in the FDA and the Cosmetic Ingredient Reviews (CIR) who say that paraben free hand cream or other skincare products are not really a priority! On the other side, we have prestigious bodies who are saying that parabens are harmful and that they may be carcinogenic. Who do you want to believe?
Let us talk a bit more about paraben free hand cream, for example. Did you know that a lot of what we smooth on to our skin will be absorbed and that this estimate can be as high as 70% in many cases. This means that any harmful or dangerous toxins and chemicals in the mix will get into our body tissues and will not necessarily be excreted either. That is why, in my opinion, we should be very careful about parabens.
A lot of products will now claim that theirs are paraben free and the label will be displayed prominently. However, it is also fair to say that they will still include other harmful toxins and agents and this is just the tip of the iceberg.
But let us go back to the parabens because these have caused the most controversy recently in skincare and cosmetic circles. The only good thing about these is that they help to keep a product from going mouldy and that means they can survive for a long time on shelves and even extreme temperatures too. But the good news ends there, I am afraid.
According to the FDA, there is no proof that the parabens can actually cause cancer. But then the FDA seems to ignore the reports that they are now appearing breast cancer tissue. The reason is that they are regarded as an endocrine disruptor and that means that they can mimic estrogen. That is one of the causes of cancer but the FDA seems to think that it cannot be as harmful as the genuine article. But why risk it?
An interesting experiment was carried out in Denmark recently. Some healthy men had cream containing parabens rubbed into their backs. A few hours later, those parabens were showing up in their blood samples. They have also been found in human urine as well. Now that means that there is no doubt that these parabens are absorbed into the human tissue and are not excreted totally.
