  • Serious Skincare – The Facts
  • It is when you start reading health warnings that you really begin to wonder about serious skincare and also begin to wonder just what exactly is in your personal care products. There is far too little regulation and the FDA very rarely issues warnings because it says that cosmetics can not be considered as drugs! In a way, they are right but in the absence of any serious watchdogs, how can we protect ourselves?

In Tunisia, recently, there was a health warning about the use of lead in eye pencil. It is regarded as being highly toxic and could actually cause cancer. This warning was actually issued by the Ministry of Health there.

In the USA, the actual regulation of cosmetic products is in the hands of the FEDCA which stands for Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FEDCA). The alarming fact is the matter is that there is no testing procedure and companies have a generally freehand as to what exactly will go into their products. In addition only about 40% of cosmetic companies actually registered with them.

As regards serious skincare the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics has taken a pretty tough stance but the actual signatories of cosmetic companies who sign up to their protocol are only about one thousand.

That is a small number when we compare the total. But once you find a company who is actually signed up, you can be sure that they are committed to totally safe and serious skincare and that the products are free of harmful chemicals and will contain only ingredients which are totally bio available. That claim in to-days’ risky world is really something to value!

One way of making sure of getting serious skincare is to use a mobile phone application which is linked up to the INCI (The International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients).  It categorizes the ingredients according to a safety color code.  There are 5,000 ingredients on their database.

Looking for these companies who are really committed to serious skincare is not so easy when you are on the shopping mall but if you see the label for The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, then you know that you are on to a winner because you cannot get any safer than that!
